Most answers to "how much is a box truck" (or how much a box truck cost new) give a round range with no source. This guide uses real numbers instead: a snapshot of 74 used box trucks listed for sale by Penske, the truck rental and leasing company, pulled on October 4, 2026, and the starting prices Ford publishes for its box-truck chassis. Then it covers what a price leaves out and how to put a value on a truck you already own.

Used box truck prices: a real snapshot

We collected every listing on the first pages of Penske Used Trucks' light-duty and medium-duty box truck categories on October 4, 2026, and grouped them by Penske's category and the chassis maker:

Three things stand out. First, mileage drives price: the medium-duty trucks at the top of the range had roughly 80,000 to 135,000 miles, while those near the bottom had 250,000 to 360,000. Second, the chassis matters: in this snapshot, Isuzu N-Series light-duty trucks asked more than the Ford E-350s, which had higher median mileage. Third, these are asking prices from one seller on one day. They are a real reference point, not a price guide, and actual sale prices can come in under asking.

New box truck prices

Truck makers publish prices for the chassis, the cab and frame, not for the finished box truck. Ford's own price data lists:

Ford chassisModel yearStarting MSRP (chassis only)
E-Series (Econoline) Cutaway2025$37,790
E-Series (Econoline) Cutaway2026$41,330
F-650 / F-7502025$69,685

The box, floor, door, liftgate and any refrigeration are built by a body company and priced on top, plus destination charges, taxes, title and registration. So a brand new 26 ft box truck costs the medium-duty chassis price plus the body and upfits; get a quote for the complete truck from a dealer or body builder before comparing it with used prices.

Box truck price new vs used: what you get for the money

The cost of a box truck splits two ways. A new truck's price is the chassis MSRP plus the body, upfits and delivery, and in return you get a known history, current warranty coverage from the maker, and a body built to your spec. A used truck's price is whatever the seller asks and the condition supports, and in return you get a much lower box truck price up front and an unknown amount of wear.

How much is a brand new 26ft box truck, then? More than any single published number can tell you: the medium-duty chassis, the 26 ft body, the liftgate and the paperwork are quoted separately. Ask for an itemized quote so you can compare it line for line with used trucks in the table above.

One term to separate: "box truck rates" usually means what a box truck is paid to haul freight, not what it costs to buy. That side is covered in box truck shipping rates.

What the price leaves out

  • Body and upfits on a new chassis: box, liftgate, side door, shelving, e-track.
  • Taxes, title and registration, which vary by state.
  • Insurance, which you need before the truck can work; see box truck insurance.
  • Authority and registration if you haul for hire; see box truck authority cost.
  • Repairs to bring a used truck up to standard, from tires to the roll-up door.

All of these, line by line, are in our box truck business start-up cost guide.

How much is a 26 ft box truck?

Box lengths were not listed in the listing text we collected, but 26 ft boxes are built on medium-duty chassis like the Freightliner M2 and International MV that make up Penske's medium-duty category. Penske's 22 to 26 ft rental trucks, for example, are rated up to 26,000 lb. In our snapshot, medium-duty box trucks asked $23,250 to $83,500, with a median of $44,750 and median mileage of about 234,000.

For a lighter, cheaper start, Penske's 12 ft rental truck is rated up to 9,900 lb; light-duty box trucks in the snapshot asked a median of about $24,900.

How much is my box truck worth?

  1. Find comparables: same chassis, same or adjacent model year, similar miles, listed for sale now.
  2. Adjust for the body: a liftgate, a newer box or a reefer unit adds value; a damaged floor or tired door takes it away.
  3. Adjust for condition and records: complete service records and a clean pre-sale inspection support a higher price.
  4. Remember listings are asking prices: a buyer may negotiate below them.

If you are selling, our sell my box truck guide covers timing and where to list.

Buying smart

The cheapest truck is not always the cheapest to own. A low price with high miles can mean repairs soon after purchase. Before you buy, read used box truck for the inspection, compare financing in box truck financing, and run the box truck cost per mile calculator and the lease vs own calculator. If you plan to haul for brokers, our box truck shipping rates guide covers the revenue side, and box truck driver salary the cost of a hired driver.

Questions box truck owners ask

Q-01How much does a box truck cost?

In our October 2026 snapshot of 74 Penske used box truck listings, asking prices ran from $7,500 to $83,500. Light-duty trucks (Ford E-350, GMC Savana, Isuzu N-Series) had a median asking price of about $24,900; medium-duty trucks (Freightliner M2, International MV) about $44,750. Mileage and model year move the price most.

Q-02How much is a new box truck?

Truck makers publish chassis prices, not finished box truck prices. Ford lists the E-Series cutaway from $41,330 for 2026 and the F-650/F-750 from $69,685 for 2025, chassis only. The box, liftgate and other upfits are added by a body builder and priced separately, so get a quote for the complete truck.

Q-03How much is a 26 ft box truck?

A 26 ft box sits on a medium-duty chassis. Penske's medium-duty box trucks in our snapshot asked $23,250 to $83,500, with a median of $44,750 and a median of about 234,000 miles. Newer trucks with lower miles were at the top of that range. New, the chassis alone starts higher than most used complete trucks.

Q-04How much is my box truck worth?

Compare it with trucks of the same chassis, model year and similar mileage listed for sale now, then adjust for condition, body and liftgate. Listings are asking prices, and actual sale prices can come in lower. Service records and a clean inspection support a higher price.

Q-05Is it cheaper to lease or buy a box truck?

It depends on how long you keep the truck, how many miles you run and what the lease includes. A lease may bundle maintenance; buying builds equity but leaves repairs to you. Compare the total cost over the same period with the lease vs own calculator before you sign.
