Dispatch and factoring questions, answered

Short answers, grouped like a bill of lading. Each one links to the page that covers it in full.

DOCK 01PRICING

Pricing and terms

Q-01How much does TruckSwing charge for dispatch?

It depends on your authority age, truck count and equipment. New authorities under 6 months pay 7%. Fleets of two or more trucks pay 4%, a limited-time rate. A single box truck or hotshot pays 7%, and a single truck of any other equipment pays 5%. The first rule that fits you sets your rate.

Fee table and calculator

Q-02What is the fee charged on?

On gross load revenue: what the load pays before your fuel, tolls and other costs come out, not your profit after them. It is a percentage, so the fee only exists when a load is hauled. If your truck sits for a week, you owe us nothing for that week.

How the fee is calculated

Q-03Is there a setup fee, minimum or long contract?

No setup fee and no monthly minimum. The agreement is month-to-month, cancel with 30 days notice, so if dispatch stops making sense for you, you give notice and leave. There is no buyout and no penalty for leaving.

What the setup looks like

Q-04Why does a box truck or hotshot pay a higher rate than a semi?

Smaller loads pay less per load, yet each one takes about the same broker calls, rate negotiation and check calls as a bigger load. A box truck or hotshot needs more bookings to fill a week, so the desk spends more time per dollar booked.

Box truck dispatch

Q-05Does my rate change when my authority turns six months old?

Yes, automatically. At month 6 you move to whichever rule then fits: 4% if you run two or more trucks, 7% for one box truck or hotshot, or 5% for one truck of other equipment. You do not need to ask.

DOCK 02LOADS

Loads and control

Q-01Can I turn down a load you find?

Yes, every time. We pitch loads that fit your truck, lanes and home time, and you say yes or no. Nothing is booked without your OK, and there is no penalty or quota for saying no. A dispatcher who forces loads is working for the fee, not the truck.

Dispatch for owner-operators

Q-02Will you book loads below my minimum rate?

No. During setup you give us a rate floor for your truck and lanes. We negotiate above it. If the only freight in a market pays under your floor, we call you with the numbers and you decide whether to take it, wait or move.

How we negotiate rates

Q-03Which trucks do you dispatch?

Eleven types: dry van, reefer, flatbed, box truck, hotshot, power only, step deck, car hauler, dump truck, oversize, and hazmat and tanker. Box trucks must be 26 ft or larger. We do not dispatch smaller box trucks, cargo vans or sprinters.

All dispatch services

Q-04Where do the loads come from?

The major load boards plus direct contacts with brokers and shippers who post freight for your equipment. Most of the work is not finding a load but picking the right one: the rate per total mile, the reload on the other end and how it lines up with your home time.

Load board vs dispatcher

Q-05Can I pick my lanes and home time?

Yes. You tell us where you run, where you will not go, and when you need to be home. We plan loads around that and plan the next load before you unload so the week ends near your house instead of three states away.

Local and regional dispatch

DOCK 03SETUP

Paperwork and setup

Q-01What documents do I need to start?

Your MC and USDOT numbers, a W-9 in your business name, a certificate of insurance with auto liability and cargo coverage, your truck and trailer details and the signed dispatch agreement. If you factor, add your Notice of Assignment. CDL carriers also need a drug and alcohol testing program.

Q-02Who fills out broker carrier packets?

We do. We complete the packets for the brokers that post freight for your truck and send you anything that needs your own signature. Each broker approves on its own schedule, and some take longer with a new MC.

Broker setup, step by step

Q-03How do I apply?

Fill out the application with your equipment, authority age and lanes. It takes about two minutes and shows your fee tier before you send it. A dispatcher then calls to go over your truck, your floor and your paperwork.

Q-04Do you handle check calls and rate confirmations?

Yes. Broker calls, check calls and delivery confirmations go through the desk, and we keep your rate confirmations in order. You get a weekly earnings report showing what each load paid.

DOCK 04NEW MC

New authority

Q-01Do you work with a brand new MC?

Yes. New authorities are welcome on any of the eleven equipment types at 7% for the first 6 months. Some brokers will not load a new MC at all, so part of our job is finding the ones that will and getting you set up with them.

New authority dispatch

Q-02Why do some brokers refuse new authorities?

Some brokers set a minimum authority age before they will load a carrier. That rule belongs to each broker, and the cutoff varies from one to the next. We track which brokers work with new carriers so you are not cold-calling into a wall.

Q-03Do I need a DOT number before I apply?

You need your own operating authority to haul for brokers under your name. If you are still working out whether you need a USDOT number, an MC number or both, the free checker walks through the rules for your truck and the type of freight you plan to haul.

Q-04Can a new authority get factoring?

Often, yes. Factoring companies weigh the credit of the brokers you haul for heavily, alongside your own authority. We can pass your details to RTS, our factoring partner, which sets rates through its own underwriting.

DOCK 05FACTORING

Factoring

Q-01Do you do factoring yourselves?

No. We are a dispatch service. If you want factoring, we refer you to RTS, our factoring partner, who quotes and funds you directly. We may be paid for that referral. It does not change your dispatch fee, and you never have to factor to use our dispatch.

Our partner disclosure

Q-02What does freight factoring cost?

Published market figures put common fees at 1.5% to 4% of the invoice, inside a wider 1% to 5% range, with advances of 70% to 95%. Your real rate depends on volume, recourse terms and your brokers' credit, so get a quote and read the fee schedule.

Factoring rates explained

Q-03Can I use dispatch and factoring together?

Yes, and many carriers do. When you factor, your Notice of Assignment tells brokers to pay the factor, and we include it in each broker packet so payments go to the right place. You still choose your loads either way.

Q-04How do I get a factoring quote?

Fill out the short quote form with your authority, truck count and monthly invoicing. We send it to RTS, who contacts you with a quote. You can also tick a box on the dispatch application to ask for both at once.

DOCK 06PARTNERS

Q-01Do box truck owners need a drug testing consortium?

Only if they drive under a CDL. DOT drug and alcohol testing applies to drivers who need a commercial license, and most box trucks under 26,001 lb GVWR do not. A box truck that needs a CDL, or one placarded for hazmat, brings the testing rules with it.

Who needs DOT drug testing

Q-02Why do you mention Vertical Identity?

It is the DOT drug and alcohol consortium we partner with for CDL carriers. An owner-operator with a CDL must be in a random testing pool, and the 2026 minimum random drug testing rate is 50%. We may be paid for enrollments. Using it is never a condition of dispatch.

Q-03What is TruckClub and is it insurance?

TruckClub offers breakdown protection and extended warranty plans for trucks. It is not insurance and does not replace liability, cargo or physical damage coverage. We mention it on pages about repairs and warranties, and we may be paid for referrals. You never need it for dispatch.

How partner offers work

Q-04Do partners pay you to recommend them?

Some do, through referral payments, and every page with an offer says so. Partners do not write, review or approve our content, and an offer only appears where it fits the problem the page covers. Our dispatch fee is the same whether you use a partner or not.
