How our guides are made

LAST UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Our guides and calculators exist to help carriers make decisions with real numbers. This page explains how we research them, where the numbers come from, and what we do when we get something wrong.

01Who writes them

Guides are written and reviewed by Ryan and the TruckSwing dispatch desk. Each guide shows its author and the month it was last updated. More about Ryan.

02Where the numbers come from

Rules come from the regulation itself (the eCFR) and the agency that enforces it (FMCSA, FHWA, state DOTs). Prices, wages and fuel come from public data such as BLS, EIA and manufacturer spec sheets. Each figure carries a source note with the month we checked it.

If we cannot verify a number, we leave it out. When a figure is our own estimate, we say so and show how we got it.

03Examples are labeled

Sample loads, sample weeks and sample rate math are marked EXAMPLE. They show how the math works. They are not results or promises.

04Keeping guides current

Pages with rates, prices, state rules or statistics are re-checked at least once a year, and sooner when a rule changes. The updated date on the page changes only when the content does.

05Partners do not write or approve our content

Some guides include an offer from a partner, explained on our disclosure page. Partners do not review, edit or approve what we publish, and an offer appears only where it fits the reader's problem.

06Report a mistake

If you spot something wrong or out of date, tell us which page and what you found: or use our contact page. We check it against the source and fix the page if we got it wrong.
