Medium duty box truck: what the term means and when it matters
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
"Medium duty" sounds like a precise category, and on a dealer's lot it is used like one. In practice, a medium duty box truck means different things depending on who is talking: a federal agency, an emissions regulator, a truck maker or a rental counter. This guide lays out each definition side by side, explains which one matters for which rule, and shows where common box trucks land.
What is a medium duty box truck?
The cleanest definition comes from the Federal Highway Administration, which groups its eight weight classes into three duty levels by gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR):
- Light duty: classes 1 and 2, up to 10,000 lb.
- Medium duty: classes 3 to 6, 10,001 to 26,000 lb.
- Heavy duty: classes 7 and 8, 26,001 lb and up.

By that measure, the term covers any box truck rated 10,001 to 26,000 lb. Every 16 to 26 ft non-CDL rental truck we checked falls in that band.
Who calls what medium duty
The trouble starts when other groups use the same words differently.
| Who | Light duty | Medium duty | Heavy duty |
|---|---|---|---|
| FHWA weight classes | Class 1-2 | Class 3-6 | Class 7-8 |
| Census Bureau truck survey (VIUS) | Under 10,000 lb | 10,001-26,000 lb | Over 26,001 lb |
| EPA (emissions certification) | Under 8,500 lb | No medium duty class | Over 8,501 lb |
| Peterbilt (maker) | Markets its class 5-8 trucks as medium duty | ||
| Penske (rental fleet) | Files its 12 and 16 ft box trucks here | Files its 22-26 ft box trucks here |

Two things stand out. Penske's 16 ft truck is rated 12,500 lb, which FHWA counts as medium duty, yet the rental fleet sells it as light duty. And a maker can call a class 7 or 8 truck medium duty even though FHWA would call it heavy. Neither is wrong; they are different labels for different purposes. But only one number decides the rules.

Which definition matters for which rule
Labels do not decide anything legal. The GVWR does, against these lines:
- Federal safety rules: a truck rated 10,001 lb or more used in interstate commerce is a commercial motor vehicle. That is the light-to-medium line in the FHWA grouping.
- CDL: a single vehicle rated 26,001 lb or more needs a CDL driver. That is the medium-to-heavy line in the FHWA grouping.
- Emissions: the EPA's split at 8,500 lb is for emissions certification and has no medium duty class at all.

So a truck that is medium duty under FHWA's grouping will never need a CDL by weight alone, and will always be a commercial motor vehicle if used in interstate business. A truck a maker calls medium duty might need either, depending on its real rating.
Medium duty chassis examples
Makers publish ratings that show how the term stretches:
- Isuzu F-Series: the FTR is class 6 at 25,950 lb GVWR; the FVR comes as class 7 at 33,000 lb or a class 6 de-rate at 25,950 lb. Same chassis family, both sides of the CDL line.
- Freightliner M2 106: class 6 to 8, with GVWR up to 66,000 lb.
- Peterbilt: a medium-duty line covering class 5 to 8.

The Isuzu example is the useful one for buyers. A "de-rated" truck is the same hardware given a lower official rating, here so it stays under 26,001 lb. Ask for the rating on the exact truck you are buying, not the model's top rating. Our box truck brands guide covers these makers in more detail.
Light duty box truck vs medium duty
A light duty box truck is rated 10,000 lb or less, such as Penske's 12 ft box at up to 9,900 lb. It stays under the federal commercial vehicle line. A medium duty truck carries more, gets a longer and taller box, and brings DOT rules into play for interstate business use.

| Light duty | Medium duty (FHWA) | |
|---|---|---|
| GVWR | Up to 10,000 lb | 10,001 to 26,000 lb |
| Boxes in the specs we checked | 10 to 12 ft | 16 to 26 ft |
| CDL | No | No |
| Interstate business use | Under the federal CMV weight line | Commercial motor vehicle: USDOT number, FMCSA safety rules |
Sizes are on our box truck sizes chart and body styles in box truck types.
Buying one
- Read the GVWR on the sticker. Not the model name and not the ad.
- Decide your CDL line first. If drivers without a CDL will run it, stay at or under 26,000 lb, and ask whether a de-rated version exists.
- Match payload to your typical load. A medium duty rating covers a wide range of payloads.
- Check records. Service history and recalls for that chassis. Our used box truck guide covers the inspection.
- Size the box to the freight. The truck size calculator helps.

Questions box truck owners ask
Q-01What class is a medium duty truck?
Classes 3 through 6 under the Federal Highway Administration's grouping, which works out to 10,001 to 26,000 lb GVWR. The Census Bureau's truck survey uses the same weight range. Class 1 and 2 are light duty, and class 7 and 8 are heavy duty in that scheme. Manufacturers sometimes stretch the term higher.
Q-02What is the difference between a light duty and a medium duty box truck?
Under FHWA's grouping, the line is 10,000 lb GVWR: light duty is 10,000 lb or less, medium duty starts at 10,001. That same line is where a truck used in interstate commerce becomes a commercial motor vehicle under federal safety rules, so it is worth knowing which side your truck is on.
Q-03Do you need a CDL for a medium duty box truck?
Not under the federal grouping: medium duty tops out at 26,000 lb, and the CDL starts at 26,001 lb GVWR (or with placarded hazmat). The catch is that some makers call heavier trucks medium duty too. A class 7 truck marketed as medium duty still needs a Class B driver.
Q-04Is a 26 ft box truck medium duty?
Usually, yes, if it is rated 26,000 lb or less, as the rental 26 footers we checked are. Penske files its 22 to 26 ft box trucks under medium duty. A 26 ft box on a class 7 chassis rated over 26,000 lb falls into FHWA's heavy duty group, even if the maker markets it as medium duty.
