Box truck leasing: four kinds of lease and how to compare them
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
Box truck leasing gets advertised as one thing, and every box truck for lease ad reads alike, but "lease" covers at least four different deals, each with its own rules about who owns the truck, who fixes it and what happens at the end. Mixing them up is how people sign a lease-to-own contract thinking it was a full-service lease. This guide separates the four, shows what each includes using a lessor's published service list and the federal rules where they apply, and gives a way to compare a lease with buying when nobody publishes prices.
Four kinds of box truck lease
| Lease type | What it is | Who maintains the truck | At the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-service lease | The truck plus a bundle of services for a monthly payment | The lessor, for what the bundle covers | Return the truck or renew |
| Finance lease (TRAC) | A lease with a terminal rental adjustment clause and an agreed residual value | You | Settle up against the actual sale price, or buy at the residual |
| Lease-to-own (lease-purchase) | Payments toward ownership | Set by the contract; often you | You own the truck after the final payment |
| Leasing onto a carrier | You own the truck and lease it, with you driving, to a carrier with authority | You, unless the lease says otherwise | The lease ends; you keep the truck |

Full-service leasing
A full-service lease bundles the truck with support. Penske Truck Leasing, for example, lists leasing services including full maintenance, roadside assistance, compliance support, fuel and distance reporting, and legalization services, with light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks available.

What you gain is predictability: maintenance becomes part of a fixed payment instead of a surprise repair bill. What you give up is equity and some freedom: the truck goes back at the end, and the contract sets mileage, use and return-condition terms. Read what is and is not included in the bundle, item by item.
Finance leases and TRAC leases
A finance lease works more like a loan with a lease structure. The common version for trucks is a TRAC lease. Under federal tax law, a terminal rental adjustment clause is a provision that lets the rent be adjusted up or down based on what the lessor realizes when it sells the vehicle.

In practice: you and the lessor agree on a residual value. At the end, the truck is sold (or you buy it). If it brings more than the residual, you may get the difference; if it brings less, you pay it. Maintenance is your responsibility. Ask your accountant how a TRAC lease is treated for your taxes before you sign.
Lease-to-own and "no credit check" deals
Lease-to-own plans end with you owning the truck after the final payment, sometimes with a buyout. Some advertise a 26 foot box truck lease to own with no credit check. Before you sign any of them:
- Add up every payment plus the buyout, and compare it with the truck's price. Our how much is a box truck guide has real asking prices to compare against.
- Find out who pays for repairs, tires and breakdowns during the term.
- Read what happens if you miss a payment: a contract may let the lessor take the truck back without returning what you paid.
- Check mileage limits, insurance requirements and early-termination charges.
- Get the truck inspected as if you were buying it; see used box truck.
Leasing your truck onto a carrier
A different deal altogether: you own a truck and lease it, with yourself as driver, to a carrier that holds operating authority. Federal truth-in-leasing rules require a written lease that gives the carrier exclusive possession and control of the equipment during the lease, states your compensation, and itemizes every charge-back that can be deducted from your pay, with how each is computed.

This path lets you haul without your own authority, at the cost of working under the carrier's rules and rates. The alternative, your own authority, is covered in how to start a box truck business, and dedicated work in box truck contracts.
How much does it cost to lease a box truck?
Whether you want to lease a box truck for a season or lease a 26ft box truck for years, the 26 foot box truck lease cost comes from the quote, not a price list.
Lessors quote each deal individually and do not publish prices, so there is no honest single lease box truck cost to quote. Compare offers on the same basis:
- Same truck, term and annual miles in every quote.
- What is bundled: maintenance, tires, roadside help, licensing, substitute vehicles.
- Total of payments over the term, plus any buyout or end-of-lease charges.
- The buy alternative: a used truck's asking price, or a new chassis price plus body. Ford, for example, lists its E-Series cutaway chassis from $41,330 for 2026, before the box.

Questions box truck owners ask
Q-01Where can I lease a box truck?
From box truck leasing companies that offer light- and medium-duty trucks, such as Penske Truck Leasing; from commercial truck dealers and their finance arms; and from independent lessors. Ask each for the same truck, term and mileage so the quotes compare like for like, and get the full contract before you sign.
Q-02How much does it cost to lease a box truck?
Lessors quote each deal individually, and none we checked publish prices. The payment depends on the truck, term, annual miles, what is bundled (maintenance, roadside help, licensing) and your credit. Compare the total paid over the term with buying the same truck, using the lease vs own calculator.
Q-03Is box truck leasing for start up business owners a good idea?
It can be. A lease can need less cash up front than a purchase, and a full-service lease turns maintenance into a fixed monthly cost. In exchange you build no equity, and mileage limits and early-termination terms can bite. Price both paths for your miles and the length of time you expect to run.
Q-04What is a TRAC lease?
A lease with a terminal rental adjustment clause. Under federal tax law, that clause lets the rent be adjusted up or down at the end, based on what the lessor gets when it sells the vehicle. In practice you agree on a residual value, and you pay or receive the difference from the actual sale price.
Q-05Are lease-to-own box trucks with no credit check a good idea?
Read the contract slowly. Approval with no credit check can be priced into a higher total cost, and missed payments can mean losing the truck and everything paid so far. Check the total of all payments, the buyout, who pays for repairs, and what happens if the truck breaks down.
