Box truck weight: how heavy it is, how much it carries, and the max it can haul
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
Box truck weight is three numbers, and most confusion comes from mixing them up. There is what the truck weighs empty, what it is allowed to weigh fully loaded, and the difference between the two, which is how much it can carry. This guide explains each, lays out real published numbers for box trucks from 10 to 26 ft, and shows how to find the true figures for your own truck.
The three numbers
- Empty (curb) weight: the truck as it sits, with no freight. Rental fleets sometimes publish it; often you have to weigh it.
- Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR): the most the truck may weigh fully loaded, set by the manufacturer and printed on the certification label in the driver's door jamb.
- Payload: GVWR minus empty weight. This is your box truck payload capacity, or box truck weight capacity: freight, plus the driver, passengers, fuel and anything else aboard.
Two trucks with the same GVWR can carry very different payloads if one is heavier empty. That is the most useful thing to know before buying or booking freight.

Published specs from three rental fleets, checked in October 2026. Where the fleet does not publish empty weight, it is our math: GVWR minus published payload.
| Truck | Empty weight | Payload | GVWR |
|---|---|---|---|
| U-Haul 10 ft | 5,790 lb | 2,850 lb | 8,600 lb |
| Penske 12 ft | about 6,800 lb (our math) | up to 3,100 lb | up to 9,900 lb |
| U-Haul 15 ft | 8,115 lb | 6,385 lb | 14,500 lb |
| Budget 16 ft | about 8,040 lb (our math) | 4,460 lb | 12,500 lb |
| Penske 16 ft | about 8,200 lb (our math) | up to 4,300 lb | up to 12,500 lb |
| U-Haul 17 ft | 8,340 lb | 6,160 lb | 14,500 lb |
| U-Haul 20 ft | 8,800 lb | 5,700 lb | 14,500 lb |
| U-Haul 26 ft | 13,140 lb | 12,859 lb | 25,999 lb |
| Penske 26 ft (non-CDL) | about 16,000 lb (our math) | up to 10,000 lb | up to 26,000 lb |
| Budget 26 ft | about 16,820 lb (our math) | 9,180 lb | 26,000 lb |
| Penske 22 to 26 ft (CDL) | about 16,000 lb (our math) | up to 17,000 lb | up to 33,000 lb |

Two patterns stand out. First, the 26 footers differ by more than 3,500 lb empty: U-Haul's gasoline truck at 13,140 lb against about 16,000 to 16,800 lb for the diesel trucks from Penske and Budget. On the same 26,000 lb rating, that becomes 3,000 lb or more of extra payload for the lighter truck. Second, U-Haul's 15 ft truck carries more than its 20 ft truck, because both are rated 14,500 lb and the bigger one weighs more empty. Bigger box does not always mean more payload.
How much weight can a box truck carry?
How much can a box truck carry? As much as its payload, and no more. From the table, published payloads run from 2,850 lb for a 10 ft truck to 12,859 lb for U-Haul's 26 footer on non-CDL ratings. A box truck rated over 26,000 lb carries more, Penske's CDL box lists up to 17,000 lb, but needs a CDL driver.

Remember what counts against payload besides freight:
- The driver and any passengers.
- Fuel: a full tank of diesel or gasoline is heavy.
- Dollies, straps, blankets, load bars, tools.
- Add-ons such as a liftgate or a refrigeration unit. Thermo King lists its T-590 truck unit at 910 lb, and Penske's refrigerated 26 ft truck carries up to 8,000 lb against up to 10,000 lb for its dry box at the same rating.

What is the max weight a box truck can haul?
Two limits apply at once:
- GVWR: the loaded truck must not weigh more than its rating.
- Axle limits: on the Interstate system, federal rules allow 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem. A heavily loaded single-axle box truck can be within its GVWR and still put too much weight on the rear axle if the load sits far back.
SOURCE:eCFR, 23 CFR 658.17, OCT 2026
So the box truck max weight is its GVWR, with the load placed so no axle is over its own limit. If you tow a trailer, the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) caps truck and trailer together.
How to find your truck's real numbers
Brochure figures are averages. To know your truck:
- Read the GVWR on the door-jamb label, and the axle ratings (GAWR) if listed.
- Weigh the truck empty on a certified truck scale, with full fuel and everything you always carry.
- Subtract: GVWR minus that weight is your working payload.
- Weigh loaded the first few times you run a heavy load, and check each axle if the scale allows.
Write the payload on a card in the cab. It answers every "can I take this load?" question in seconds.
Weight and the loads you book
Freight on a box truck runs out of either floor space or weight. Light, bulky freight (mattresses, furniture) fills the box first. Dense freight (tile, paper, beverages) hits payload first. See how many pallets fit in a 26 box truck for a weight budget per pallet, and our box truck loads guide for finding freight that suits your truck. Sizes are on the box truck sizes chart; for buying, see how much is a box truck. The truck size calculator and the max payload calculator do the math.

Questions box truck owners ask
Q-01How much does a box truck weigh?
Empty, U-Haul publishes 5,790 lb for its 10 ft truck, 8,800 lb for its 20 ft and 13,140 lb for its 26 ft. Diesel 26 ft rentals from Budget and Penske work out to about 16,000 to 16,800 lb from their published ratings and payloads. Options like a liftgate or reefer unit add more.
Q-02How much weight can a box truck carry?
That is its payload: GVWR minus empty weight. Published payloads range from 2,850 lb for U-Haul's 10 ft truck to 12,859 lb for its 26 ft, and up to 17,000 lb for Penske's CDL 22 to 26 ft box. Fuel, driver and gear count against it.
Q-03What is the max weight a box truck can haul?
The truck's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) caps the loaded weight. For non-CDL box trucks that tops out at 26,000 lb; CDL straight trucks are rated higher, like Penske's CDL box at up to 33,000 lb. On the Interstate, federal axle limits (20,000 lb on a single axle) also apply.
Q-04How do I find my box truck's weight capacity?
Read the GVWR on the certification label in the driver's door jamb. Then weigh the truck empty, with full fuel and the gear you always carry, on a certified truck scale. GVWR minus that scale weight is your real payload, often different from the brochure figure.
Q-05Does a liftgate or reefer unit change the payload?
Yes. The GVWR stays the same, so anything added to the truck reduces payload. Thermo King lists its T-590 refrigeration unit at 910 lb, and Penske's refrigerated 26 ft truck lists up to 8,000 lb of payload against up to 10,000 lb for its dry box on the same rating.
