How many pallets fit in a 26 box truck: the floor math, drawn to scale

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

"Twelve" is the quick answer to how many pallets fit in a 26 box truck, and it is right for straight loading. But the real answer depends on two numbers: how wide the box is inside at its narrowest point, and how much the freight weighs. This guide works through both with the published inside dimensions of three rental 26 footers, draws the two loading patterns to scale, and turns payload into a weight budget per pallet.

The inside of a 26 ft box truck

The pallet count comes straight from the floor. Here are three published specs:

All three are 97 inches wide inside and between 311 and 314 inches long. That narrow range is why the answer is so consistent across 26 footers.

Pattern 1: straight loading, 12 pallets

A standard pallet is 48 x 40 inches. Loaded "straight," the 48 inch side runs down the length of the box and two pallets sit side by side, using 80 of the 97 inches of width. Each row takes 48 inches of floor.

6 rows x 2 = 12 pallets · 288 of 312 in used · cab end at left
Straight loading in a 312 x 97 inch box: six rows of two, 12 pallets, with 24 inches of floor left at the door

Six rows take 288 inches, leaving about 2 feet at the door: room for loose freight, a pallet jack, or load bars. This is the layout to plan around when someone asks how many pallets can fit in a 26 foot box truck. It leaves 17 inches of width to spare, so pallets that overhang a little, or rails on the walls, do not stop it.

Pattern 2: turned loading, 14 pallets

Turn the pallets so the 48 inch side runs across the box. Two across now need 96 inches, and each row takes only 40 inches of floor.

7 rows x 2 = 14 pallets · 280 of 312 in used · cab end at left
Turned loading in a 312 x 97 inch box: seven rows of two, 14 pallets, with 32 inches of floor left

Seven rows take 280 inches, so the answer to how many pallets can fit on a 26 foot box truck becomes fourteen, on paper. The catch is width: 96 inches of pallets in a 97 inch box leaves one inch. Logistic rails, wall posts, a slightly wider pallet or an overhanging load can make it impossible. Measure the narrowest inside width, rail to rail, before you promise fourteen.

EXAMPLE, both patterns on the three published floors:

BoxStraight (48 in rows)Turned (40 in rows, needs 96 in width)
Budget, 312 x 97 in6 rows, 12 pallets7 rows, 14 pallets
Penske, 311 x 97 in6 rows, 12 pallets7 rows, 14 pallets
U-Haul, 314 x 97 in6 rows, 12 pallets7 rows, 14 pallets

Weight decides before the floor does

Pallets of light freight fill the floor. Pallets of dense freight fill the payload first. Divide the published payload by the pallet count to see the average weight each position can carry:

TruckPayloadPer pallet, 12 positionsPer pallet, 14 positions

Penske 26 ftup to 10,000 lbabout 833 lbabout 714 lb

A shipment of twelve 1,000 lb pallets fits the U-Haul truck's payload but is over Budget's and Penske's. Payload also has to cover the driver and anything else on board. Weigh the loaded truck when you are near the limit; the box truck weight guide explains how.

Other pallet sizes

Not every pallet is 48 x 40. The same floor math applies to any size:

The truck size calculator runs this for your own pallet size and box. For the full set of box sizes, see our box truck sizes chart; the 24 foot box truck guide shows how one inch of length can cost a row.

Getting pallets through the door

Every pallet goes in through the rear door, one at a time, so the door rarely limits a 48 inch pallet: Budget's opening is 7 ft 10 in wide and U-Haul's 7 ft 9 in. Height is the tighter limit. U-Haul's door is 6 ft 10 in high against an 8 ft 3 in box, so a tall pallet that fits inside may not fit through the door. And without a dock, you need a liftgate rated for the pallet's weight.

How many pallets fit on a truck, in general

The same method works for any box: count how many pallets fit across the narrowest inside width, divide the inside length by the pallet's run, round down, and multiply. Then check weight against payload. When you look at a load, check the same three things: pallet count, weight and whether a liftgate is needed. Questions box truck owners ask

Q-01How many pallets can a 26 ft box truck hold?

Twelve standard 48 x 40 inch pallets loaded straight, two across and six deep, on the published inside dimensions of rental 26 footers. Fourteen fit if you turn them so the 48 inch side runs across the box, but that needs 96 inches of clear width, and these boxes are only about 97 inches wide inside.

Q-02How many pallets fit in a box truck?

It depends on the inside length and width. Rows of two across need at least 80 inches of width; each row then takes 48 inches of floor. A 16 ft box takes four or eight depending on width, a 20 ft box eight to ten, a 26 ft box twelve. Our box truck sizes chart shows the count for each size.

Q-03How much weight can each pallet be in a 26 ft box truck?

Divide the payload by the pallet count. With twelve pallets, published payloads from Budget, Penske and U-Haul give about 765, 833 and 1,072 lb per pallet on average. Heavier pallets mean fewer of them. Weigh the loaded truck if you are close.

Q-04Can you double stack pallets in a 26 ft box truck?

Only if the freight is built to be stacked and the height allows it. Inside heights run about 8 ft 1 in to 8 ft 7 in, and the rear door is lower: 6 ft 10 in on U-Haul's truck. Double stacking also doubles the weight on the same floor space, so check payload before you count on it.

Q-05How many linear feet do 12 pallets take?

Loaded straight, two across, each row takes 4 feet of floor, so 12 pallets use 24 linear feet. Turned, each row takes 3 ft 4 in, so 14 pallets use about 23 ft 4 in. Linear feet is the floor length a shipment occupies (a linear feet calculator for freight is just rows times row length), a handy number when you are fitting a partial load next to other freight.
