24 foot box truck: dimensions, payload and what it fits
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
The 24 foot box truck sits between the 22 and the 26: big enough for a full household move or a solid load of pallets, rated just under the CDL line. It is less common than either neighbor. Of the big rental fleets, Enterprise is the one that publishes a 24 ft spec. This guide reads those numbers carefully, works out the pallet count, and shows where a 24 fits against the sizes around it.
24 foot box truck dimensions
Enterprise publishes two 24 ft box truck pages, and they do not quite agree. Its railgate model lists a box of 24 ft x 102 in x 102 in. Its standard business model lists 26 ft x 102 in x 102 in for the same truck class, with 1,500 cubic feet of cargo space. Both say actual numbers vary by year, make, model and location.

Two things to read into those 24 ft box truck dimensions:
- 102 inches is the outside width. Federal rules cap commercial vehicle width at 102 inches on the National Network of highways, so a box listed at 102 in wide is measured outside the walls. Inside, expect about 8 ft 1 in, the inside width Penske and Budget publish for their 22 and 26 ft boxes.
- 1,500 cubic feet is the useful number. It sits right between Penske's 22 ft box (1,200 cu ft) and the 26 ft boxes from Penske and Budget (about 1,700 cu ft), which is what you would expect from the length.

Because the published figures disagree, measure any 24' box truck you plan to rent or buy: inside length wall to door, inside width between the rails, inside height under the roof bows, and the rear door opening.
Payload, GVWR and the CDL line
Enterprise rates its 24 ft box truck at 25,999 lb GVWR with up to 10,000 lb of payload. That rating matters more than the length. Under federal rules, a CDL is required for a vehicle rated 26,001 lb or more, or one hauling placarded hazmat. At 25,999 lb, this 24 ft truck can be driven on a regular license.

Other builders put 24 ft bodies on different chassis. A 24 ft body on a heavier chassis can be rated above 26,000 lb, and then it needs a CDL driver no matter how long the box is. Check the sticker in the driver's door jamb, not the ad.
How many pallets fit in a box 24 feet long
The pallet count comes down to inches. A standard pallet is 48 x 40 inches. With an inside width around 8 ft 1 in (97 in), two pallets fit side by side with their 40-inch faces across. Each row then takes 48 inches of floor.
EXAMPLE, single-stacked, two across:
| Inside length | Full 48 in rows | Pallets |
|---|---|---|
| 24 ft 0 in (288 in) | 6 | 12 |
| 23 ft 11 in (287 in) | 5 | 10 |
| 22 ft 0 in (264 in) | 5 | 10 |
One inch of floor is the difference between 10 and 12 pallets. That is why a 24 is not always "two pallets more than a 22": it depends on whether the body reaches a full 24 ft inside. The truck size calculator runs this math on your own measurements.
What the 24 is used for
With about 1,500 cubic feet and up to 10,000 lb of payload, the 24 handles:
- Household moves: larger homes that would overfill a 20 ft box.
- Furniture and appliance delivery: with a liftgate, to homes and stores without a dock.
- Warehouse and pallet freight: dock-high bodies let pallet jacks roll straight in at a loading dock.
24 vs 22 and 26 ft
| 22 ft (Penske) | 24 ft (Enterprise) | 26 ft (Penske / Budget) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume | 1,200 cu ft | 1,500 cu ft | about 1,700 cu ft |
| Payload | up to 10,000 lb | up to 10,000 lb | 9,180 to 10,000 lb |
| GVWR | not listed | 25,999 lb | 26,000 lb |
| Pallets (two across) | 10 | 10 to 12 | 12 |

All three sit at or just under the non-CDL rating, so the choice comes down to space, parking and the freight you plan to haul. For smaller trucks, see the 20 foot box truck, 16 foot box truck and 12 foot box truck guides, or compare every size on our box truck sizes chart.
Renting or buying a 24 foot truck
Renting one fits a move or a short-term business need, and Enterprise's business pages list it for commercial use. Buying one makes sense when the work is steady and the freight fits the box. Buying used? Check the GVWR sticker, the liftgate or railgate's service history, the roll-up door and the floor before you pay. Our used box truck guide covers the inspection.
The one question to settle before you buy: will the work ever need a 26? Planning to haul for brokers? Look at how the loads you want are posted: box loads list the truck size and liftgate they need, and a load posted for a 26 ft box is one a 24 has to pass on.

Questions box truck owners ask
Q-01How much can a 24 ft box truck carry?
Enterprise lists up to 10,000 lb of payload on its 24 ft box trucks, rated 25,999 lb GVWR. Payload varies with the chassis, body and options like a liftgate, so a different build can carry less. The real number for any truck is its GVWR minus its weight empty, measured on a scale with fuel and gear aboard.
Q-02Do you need a CDL to drive a 24 foot box truck?
Not for a truck rated 26,000 lb GVWR or less that carries no placarded hazmat. Enterprise's 24 ft box is rated 25,999 lb, so the typical build is non-CDL. A 24 ft body on a heavier chassis rated 26,001 lb or more would need a CDL driver, so read the door sticker.
Q-03How many pallets fit in a 24 ft box truck?
Ten to twelve standard 48 x 40 inch pallets, single-stacked and loaded two across. Six rows need 24 ft 0 in of clear floor; if the inside length is even an inch short, the sixth row will not fit and you load ten. Measure the inside length wall to door before quoting a load.
Q-04Is a 24 ft box truck dock height?
Enterprise describes its 24 ft trucks as dock high with a reinforced body, meaning the floor is built up near loading-dock level so pallet jacks roll straight in. Floor heights vary by build. If you load at warehouses, measure the floor against the docks you use; if you deliver to homes, the liftgate matters more.
Q-05Should I buy a 24 or a 26 foot box truck?
If your work is moves or local delivery that rarely fills the box, a 24 can be a little easier to park and turn. For pallet freight booked through brokers, the 26 can add a pallet row on the same non-CDL rating, and broker loads list the box size they need. Match the box to your freight first.
