12 ft box truck with liftgate: two weight limits, and where to find one

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

A 12 ft box truck with liftgate is a delivery tool: a box small enough for city streets and residential driveways, with a powered platform that lowers heavy items to the ground instead of a driver lifting them down. It is a less common configuration than the big 26 ft liftgate trucks, and the details matter more on a small truck, where every pound of gate comes out of a small payload. This guide covers the two weight limits, the kinds of gates that fit small boxes, where to find one, and what to check.

The two weight limits on every lift

A liftgate truck has two separate limits, and both apply on every delivery:

LimitWhat it capsPublished example
Liftgate capacityThe load on the platform in one liftMaxon C2 stake bed and van body gate: 1,600 lb
Truck payloadEverything in the truck for the whole tripPenske 12 ft: up to 3,100 lb; Budget 12 ft class: 3,610 lb

EXAMPLE, an appliance delivery route on a 12 ft truck with 3,100 lb of payload and a 1,600 lb gate:

Pounds
Truck payload3,100
Driver and helper (assumed 400 lb)400
Hand truck, straps, blankets (assumed 100 lb)100
Left for freight2,600
Heaviest single item on the gate, with hand truckmust stay under 1,600
EXAMPLE

The gate could lift a 1,000 lb item easily, but three of them would put the truck over payload. Plan the route by total weight, and the lifts by the heaviest single piece.

Liftgate types that fit a small box

  • Light-duty fold or rail-style gates made for van bodies and stake beds. Maxon rates its C2 for stake bed and van body use at 1,600 lb.
  • Tuck-under gates that fold beneath the body when not in use, leaving the rear door clear. Maxon's Tuk-A-Way GPT is rated up to 5,000 lb with a 60 x 80 inch platform, more than a 12 ft truck's whole payload, so on a small truck the truck, not the gate, sets the limit.

Which fits depends on the body, the frame and the deck height. A gate installer works from the chassis and body specs; ask for the installed weight along with the capacity. Gate types are covered in more detail in our liftgate truck guide.

Liftgate or ramp on a small box truck?

Small rental trucks sit low. U-Haul lists a 29 inch deck height for its 10 ft truck and 33 inches for its 15 ft, low enough that a loading ramp or hand-loading works for light freight. U-Haul's 10 ft truck has no ramp at all.

A liftgate earns its weight when items are too heavy or awkward to roll up a ramp safely: appliances, safes, machinery, palletized goods. For boxes, bedding and light furniture, a ramp or the low deck may be enough, and the truck keeps its payload. See box truck ramp.

Renting a 12 ft box truck with liftgate

The published 12 ft specs from the big national fleets we checked do not include a liftgate: Penske's 12 ft truck lists a rear roll-up door, and Budget's 12 ft class truck lists a 5 ft 11 in x 5 ft 5 in rear door, both without a gate. So:

  • Ask commercial rental branches whether they keep liftgate-equipped small trucks.
  • Check local and regional rental companies, which may stock specialty configurations.
  • Confirm the gate's rated capacity and platform size before you book, and test it before you load.

Buying a 12 ft box truck with liftgate

  1. Payload after the gate: weigh the finished truck and subtract from the GVWR.
  2. Gate rating and platform size: against your heaviest regular item and the hand truck you use.
  3. Service history: hydraulic leaks, worn hinge pins, slow lift or uneven platform are warning signs. See liftgate not working on box truck.
  4. Electrical: the gate's pump runs off the truck's electrical system, so check the battery, cables and charging.
  5. DOT status: a 12 ft truck rated over 10,000 lb used in interstate business is a commercial motor vehicle. See our 12 foot box truck guide for the ratings.

When a 12 footer is the wrong size

If your routes regularly hit the payload limit, or you need two pallets side by side, the next sizes up carry more: see the 16 foot box truck and the box truck sizes chart. The truck size calculator compares your typical load against each box.

Questions box truck owners ask

Q-01Can you rent a 12 ft box truck with a liftgate?

Sometimes, but not from the published standard specs of the big national rental fleets we checked: Penske's and Budget's 12 ft trucks and U-Haul's 10 ft truck list no liftgate. Ask commercial truck rental branches and local rental companies, which may carry liftgate-equipped small trucks, and confirm the gate's capacity before you book.

Q-02How much weight can a 12 ft box truck liftgate lift?

It depends on the gate. Maxon rates its C2 stake bed and van body liftgate at 1,600 lb, and its Tuk-A-Way GPT tuck-under gate at up to 5,000 lb. The gate's rating is per lift: the load on the platform, including any hand truck, must stay under it.

Q-03Is a liftgate worth it on a 12 ft box truck?

If you deliver heavy single items, like appliances, safes or palletized goods, to places without docks, yes: it replaces lifting by hand or rolling up a ramp. If your freight is light boxes and furniture you can carry, a ramp or the truck's low deck may be enough, and you keep more payload.

Q-04Does a liftgate reduce payload on a small box truck?

Yes. The gate, its pump and its mounting are added to the truck's empty weight, and the GVWR does not change, so every pound of liftgate comes off payload. On a 12 ft truck with about 3,100 to 3,600 lb of payload to start with, ask the installer for the installed weight and weigh the finished truck.
