12 foot box truck: dimensions, payload and the 10,000 lb line

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The 12 foot box truck is the small end of the box truck range: big enough for a studio move or a day of small deliveries. Two published rental specs both call their truck a 12 footer, yet one box is two feet shorter inside and the two sit on opposite sides of a federal weight line. Here is what each one really offers and why that line matters.

Budget names its truck by size class, but the box measures 10 ft inside. When you rent or buy a 12' box truck, ask for the inside length, not the name.

The 10,000 lb line between two 12 footers

Look at the GVW row. Penske's 12 ft truck is rated 9,900 lb, which makes it a class 2 vehicle on the FHWA scale (6,001 to 10,000 lb). Budget's is rated 10,050 lb, which makes it class 3 (10,001 to 14,000 lb). For a household move, that changes nothing. For a business, it can.

Under federal safety rules, a vehicle rated 10,001 lb or more used in interstate commerce is a commercial motor vehicle. A company running Budget's truck across state lines would need a USDOT number and fall under FMCSA safety rules. The same company running Penske's truck, at 150 lb less on the rating, would not meet that federal definition by weight.

Neither needs a CDL; that line is 26,001 lb. State rules can differ from the federal ones, and other factors (hazmat, passengers) can apply. The DOT and MC number checker walks through your case.

How many pallets fit

Two pallets across need at least 80 inches of width. Neither 12 footer has it: 78 inches inside on Penske's, 72 on Budget's. So pallets go one across, and the floor length decides how many rows fit.

EXAMPLE, standard 48 x 40 inch pallets, single-stacked, one across:

BoxPallet orientationRowsPallets
12 ft (144 in)48 in side along the floor33
10 ft (120 in)48 in side along the floor22
10 ft (120 in)40 in side along the floor33

Turning the pallets wins a row in the shorter box. The truck size calculator runs the same floor math on your own measurements.

How much a 12 ft truck carries

About 3,100 to 3,600 lb of payload. Three pallets at 1,000 lb each would use nearly all of it on Penske's spec, so this is a light-freight truck: furniture, boxes, retail goods, tools. The driver, a helper and a full tank all come out of the payload too.

What it is good for

  • Small moves: a studio or small apartment, sized by cubic feet.
  • Local deliveries: furniture, appliances one or two at a time, retail orders.
  • Trades and service work: a lockable, dry box for tools and materials.
  • Events and pop-ups: tables, displays and equipment.

Watch the door. Budget's rear opening is 5 ft 5 in high against a 6 ft 3 in box, so tall pieces may need to go in on their side. A liftgate on a truck this size is a separate build; see our 12 ft box truck with liftgate guide.

12 ft vs 10, 16 and 20 ft

One line each: a 10 foot box truck is the smallest step down; a 16 foot box truck roughly doubles the volume (Penske lists 800 cubic feet) at 12,500 lb GVW; a 20 foot box truck moves up to around 14,500 lb. The box truck sizes chart compares every length from 10 to 26 ft.

Renting or buying one

Renting fits a move or a short job. Buying fits steady local work where a ton and a half and under 450 cubic feet cover the jobs. When buying used, read the GVW sticker (it decides the DOT question above), weigh the truck empty, and inspect the roll-up door, floor and cutaway chassis. The used box truck guide has the full checklist.

Questions box truck owners ask

Q-01How much can a 12 ft box truck carry?

Penske lists up to 3,100 lb of payload for its 12 ft truck and Budget 3,610 lb for its "12 ft" model. That is about a ton and a half of freight, less once you count the driver, a passenger and any equipment. For a truck you own, subtract its weight on a scale from the GVW on the door sticker.

Q-02Do you need a CDL to drive a 12 foot box truck?

No. A CDL starts at 26,001 lb GVWR, or with placarded hazmat, and a 12 ft box truck is rated around 10,000 lb. The line that does matter for business use is 10,001 lb: above it, a truck used in interstate commerce is a commercial motor vehicle and needs a USDOT number.

Q-03How many pallets fit in a 12 ft box truck?

Three standard 48 x 40 inch pallets, single-stacked, in either of the two rental trucks we checked. Neither box is wide enough for two pallets across, which needs at least 80 inches. In the shorter Budget box, three fit only if you turn them so the 40-inch side runs along the floor.

Q-04What fits in a 12 ft box truck?

Around 380 to 450 cubic feet of goods: a studio or small one-bedroom move, a few pieces of furniture for delivery, or tools and materials for a job. Watch the door: Budget's rear opening is 5 ft 5 in high, so tall items may need to go in on their side.

Q-05How tall is a 12 foot box truck?

Budget lists 9 ft of outside clearance for its 12 ft truck, and inside heights run about 6 ft 1 in to 6 ft 3 in in the two specs we checked. That outside height clears more places than a bigger box, but not every drive-thru or parking garage. Check the posted clearance before you pull in.
