16 foot box truck: dimensions, payload and why two 16 footers differ

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The 16 foot box truck is a staple of rental lots: rated far below the CDL line, big enough for an apartment. What the size name hides is how much one 16 footer can differ from another. Two published rental specs, both called 16 ft, differ by more than a foot of inside width. This guide puts them side by side and explains what that means for weight, pallets and the rules.

Same length, same rating, same fuel tank. The width is what differs: 75 inches inside on one, up to 91 inches on the other. That difference shows up in volume (658 vs 800 cubic feet) and, more sharply, in pallets.

How many pallets fit in a 16 box truck

A standard pallet is 48 x 40 inches. To load two across with the 40-inch faces side by side you need at least 80 inches of clear width.

EXAMPLE

Four extra pallets from 16 inches of width. Before you quote pallet freight, measure the narrowest point inside, which may be between the wheel wells, not the widest. The truck size calculator runs the floor math on your numbers.

How much weight can a 16 foot box truck carry?

About two tons. Budget lists 4,460 lb of payload and Penske up to 4,300 lb, both on a 12,500 lb rating. Payload is what is left of the GVWR after the truck's own weight, and everything you add counts against it: the driver, a full tank, dollies, straps and blankets.

Eight pallets in a wide 16 ft box would average just over 500 lb each before you hit 4,300 lb. Light freight like furniture or bedding fills the floor first. Dense freight like flooring, tools or paper hits the weight limit with floor to spare.

Weight class, CDL and DOT rules

At 12,500 lb GVWR, a 16 ft box truck is a class 3 truck on the FHWA scale (10,001 to 14,000 lb).

  • No CDL. A CDL starts at 26,001 lb GVWR, or with placarded hazmat. A 16 footer is nowhere near it.
  • DOT rules can still apply. For safety rules, a vehicle rated over 10,000 lb used in interstate commerce is a commercial motor vehicle. A business sending one across state lines needs a USDOT number and follows the FMCSA rules that go with it.

A family renting a 16 footer for its own move is not hauling for hire. A company using one for deliveries may be. The DOT and MC number checker sorts out which numbers apply.

What a 16 ft truck is good for

  • Small moves: studios, apartments and small homes, measured by cubic feet.
  • Local delivery: furniture, appliances and retail orders, with a ramp or an added liftgate.
  • Trades and service work: tools, materials and equipment that need to stay dry and locked.
  • Light pallet runs: four to eight pallets, depending on the box width.

Watch the door. Budget's rear opening is 6 ft 1 in high while the box is 6 ft 7 in, so a tall wardrobe or shelving unit that fits the box can still catch on the header. And at 11 ft of outside clearance, check every drive-thru and parking garage sign before you pull in.

Compared with 12 and 20 ft

One line each: a 12 foot box truck holds about half the volume on a lighter chassis, and a 20 foot box truck adds about four feet of floor and a heavier rating. The 10 foot box truck is the smallest of the range. Every size is on the box truck sizes chart.

Renting or buying one

Renting fits one-off moves and short jobs; the specs above are rental fleet trucks. Buying fits steady local work where two tons and roughly 700 cubic feet cover most jobs. When buying used, check the GVWR sticker, weigh the truck empty to learn its real payload, measure inside width at the wheel wells, and inspect the roll-up door, ramp and floor. Our used box truck guide has the full checklist.

Questions box truck owners ask

Q-01How much weight can a 16 foot box truck carry?

Budget lists 4,460 lb of payload for its 16 ft truck and Penske up to 4,300 lb, both on a 12,500 lb GVWR. That is roughly two tons of freight. A different build can carry less, especially with a liftgate added, so check your truck's GVWR and its weight on a scale.

Q-02How much does a 16 foot box truck weigh?

Empty, about 8,000 to 8,200 lb for the two rental builds we checked. That is our math from their published numbers: Budget's 12,500 lb GVWR minus 4,460 lb of payload leaves 8,040 lb, and Penske's 12,500 lb minus 4,300 lb leaves 8,200 lb. Fuel, a driver and any equipment count against the payload.

Q-03Do you need a CDL to drive a 16 ft box truck?

No. A CDL is required at 26,001 lb GVWR or for placarded hazmat, and a 16 ft box at 12,500 lb is less than half of that. Business use is different from driving, though: over 10,000 lb in interstate commerce, the truck is a commercial motor vehicle and needs a USDOT number.

Q-04How many pallets fit in a 16 ft box truck?

Four or eight standard 48 x 40 inch pallets, single-stacked, depending on the inside width. Penske's 7 ft 7 in box takes two across in four rows. Budget's 6 ft 3 in box takes one across, so four. Measure between the walls or the wheel wells before you quote pallets.

Q-05What fits in a 16 ft box truck?

About 650 to 800 cubic feet of goods: a small apartment or a one or two bedroom move, a load of furniture for local delivery, or a few pallets of light freight. The door limits tall pieces: Budget's rear door opening is 6 ft 1 in high, lower than the box itself.
