26 foot box truck: dimensions, weight, payload and the freight it hauls
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
The 26 foot box truck is the largest common box truck size, and the typical build can be driven without a CDL. Below are its real dimensions from three published specs, what it weighs and carries, how the door and liftgate limit what goes in, and what kind of work a 26 ft box books.
26' box truck dimensions from three published specs
Fleets build 26 footers on different chassis and bodies, so numbers vary by a few inches and a few hundred pounds. Here are three rental fleets' published specs side by side, checked in October 2026 (U-Haul's through an Internet Archive snapshot of its page, since the live site blocks automated access).

Penske's moving-truck page lists 8 ft 1 in of inside height for its 26 footer and its commercial page lists 8 ft 7 in, so even one fleet's trucks differ. Measure the one you are using.
How long, wide and tall is it?
Length: the box is about 26 ft inside. The whole truck is longer, since the cab and hood sit ahead of the box. On tight city streets and in parking, plan around the overall length of the 26' truck rather than the box alone.
Width: about 8 ft 1 in inside. That is wide enough for two standard pallets side by side, which is a big reason the 26 ft box suits pallet freight.
Height: 8 ft 1 in to 8 ft 7 in inside in the three specs above, and 12 to 13 ft of outside clearance on U-Haul's and Budget's trucks. There is no federal height limit; states set their own, mostly 13 ft 6 in to 14 ft, and bridges and overhangs are posted lower. Know your clearance before you need it.

Weight, payload and the CDL line
A 26 foot truck's most important number is printed on the door-jamb sticker, not the box: the GVWR. All three rental 26 footers above are rated 25,999 or 26,000 lb, at or just under the highest rating you can drive without a CDL. Under federal rules, a vehicle rated 26,001 lb or more needs a CDL driver, as does any vehicle hauling placarded hazmat.

Payload is GVWR minus empty weight. With roughly 9,000 to 13,000 lb of payload depending on the build, a 26 ft box can fill its floor with light freight like furniture and mattresses but runs out of weight long before space with dense freight like tile, paper or beverages. Penske's CDL-required 22 to 26 ft box is rated up to 33,000 lb GVW with up to 17,000 lb of payload: the same box, carrying more, with a CDL driver.

The license details, and which DOT paperwork still applies to a non-CDL 26 footer, are in our 26 ft box truck license requirements guide.
What a 26 footer hauls
The 26 ft box sits where a lot of freight lands:
- Pallet freight: twelve standard pallets single-stacked on the floor. That is enough for LTL-size shipments between warehouses and distribution centers. See how many pallets fit in a 26 box truck for other layouts.
- Final mile and furniture: with a liftgate, it delivers to homes and stores without a dock. Budget and Penske list liftgate models rated 3,000 lb (U-Haul's uses a ramp); check the weight of your heaviest piece or pallet against it.
- Moves: household and office moves, the job the rental 26 footers are built for.
- Expedited and partial loads: time-sensitive freight that does not need a full 53 ft trailer.
What it does not do well: very heavy freight that hits the payload first, and anything taller than the door opening. Budget's door is 7 ft 10 in by 7 ft 7 in; a piece that clears the box height can still catch on the door header.
Renting vs buying a 26 foot box truck
Renting a 26 ft truck fits a one-off move, a seasonal surge or testing a route before you commit. You get a maintained truck with a known spec, and rental counters quote by the day or week plus mileage. Buying fits steady work: once a truck runs most weeks, ownership costs can be planned against revenue, and you can spec the body you need (liftgate, side door, e-track, dock height floor).
Before buying a used 26 footer, check the GVWR sticker against the work you plan, the liftgate's capacity and service history, the roll-up door's springs and track, and the floor for soft spots. Our used box truck guide has the full inspection list.
If you plan to haul for brokers under your own authority, spec the liftgate: box loads list it as a requirement when the receiver has no dock. A 26 foot box truck with sleeper cab is also built; the trade-offs are in our box truck with sleeper guide.
Compared with smaller boxes
One comparison line, since each size has its own guide: a 24 foot box truck gives up about one pallet row, a 20 foot box truck about two, and a 12 foot box truck is a different class of vehicle altogether. The full side-by-side is on our box truck sizes chart, and the truck size calculator checks your load against each one.
If you run one for hire, TruckSwing dispatches it at 7% of gross for a single truck with six months or more on its authority.

Questions box truck owners ask
Q-01How much does a 26 foot box truck weigh?
Between about 13,000 and 17,000 lb empty, depending on the build. U-Haul publishes 13,140 lb for its gasoline 26 footer. For the diesel builds, our math from published numbers: Budget's 26,000 lb rating minus 9,180 lb of payload leaves about 16,820 lb, and Penske's minus up to 10,000 lb leaves about 16,000 lb.
Q-02How much weight can a 26 ft box truck carry?
Budget lists 9,180 lb of payload, Penske up to 10,000 lb and U-Haul a 12,859 lb max load for their non-CDL 26 footers, all rated 25,999 or 26,000 lb GVWR. The lighter gasoline truck carries more. CDL builds rated higher carry more: Penske's CDL version lists up to 17,000 lb. Your own truck's limit is its GVWR minus what it weighs empty on a scale.
Q-03How many cubic feet is a 26 foot box truck?
About 1,700. Budget lists 1,698 cubic feet and Penske up to 1,700. That is roughly four times the space of a 12 ft box. Remember the door opening is smaller than the box: Budget's rear door is 7 ft 10 in wide and 7 ft 7 in high, so tall pieces have to clear the door first.
Q-04Do you need a CDL to drive a 26 foot box truck?
Not if it is rated 26,000 lb GVWR or less and carries no placarded hazmat, which covers the typical rental build. A 26 ft box on a heavier chassis rated 26,001 lb or more needs a CDL. Our 26 ft license guide covers the DOT number, medical card and other paperwork that can still apply.
Q-05How many pallets fit in a 26 foot box truck?
Twelve standard 48 x 40 inch pallets on the floor, single-stacked: six rows of two across in a box about 8 ft 1 in wide. Weight usually runs out before floor space with dense freight, so check the total against your payload. Our pallet guide works through other pallet sizes and layouts.
