Dock height box truck: how your floor lines up with a loading dock
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
"Dock height" sounds like a minor spec until a box truck backs up to a warehouse and its floor sits a foot below the dock. Then the pallet jack cannot cross, the forklift will not go in, and the freight waits. This guide explains what a dock height box truck is, lines up real published floor heights against the common dock, shows how steep the gap gets, and what to do when the truck and the dock do not match.
What is a dock height box truck?
A dock height (or dock high) box truck has its cargo floor built up close to the height of a standard loading dock. With the floor and the dock nearly level, a dock leveler bridges the small gap and pallet jacks and forklifts drive straight in and out. Enterprise describes its 24 ft box trucks as "dock high with reinforced body," and Penske lists a floor height of about 46 to 50 inches for its 22 to 26 ft box trucks.

How high is a trucking dock?
Dock equipment maker Blue Giant gives 48 to 52 inches as the most common dock height, and notes that vehicle beds range from 30 to 62 inches. Buildings set their docks for the vehicles they see most, so a dock built for semi trailers may not suit a low box truck.

Box truck dock height vs the dock: the gap
Published floor heights from rental specs, compared with a 48 inch dock:
| Truck | Published floor or deck height | Gap to a 48 in dock |
|---|---|---|
| U-Haul 10 ft | 29 in | 19 in below |
| U-Haul 15 ft | 33 in | 15 in below |
| U-Haul 20 ft | 35 in | 13 in below |
| U-Haul 26 ft | 35 in | 13 in below |
| Penske 22 to 26 ft | about 46 to 50 in | 2 in below to 2 in above |

The rental moving trucks sit low, which suits loading by hand or up a ramp. Penske's commercial box is built for docks. Same length class, very different trucks at a warehouse.
How steep is the leveler?
A dock leveler is a hinged plate that bridges the gap between the dock and the truck floor. The bigger the gap, the steeper it gets. Blue Giant gives maximum grades for the equipment crossing it: 10% for electric-powered handling equipment and 15% for gas or diesel equipment.

EXAMPLE, assuming an 8 ft (96 inch) leveler:
| Gap | Grade | Within 10% (electric)? | Within 15% (gas/diesel)? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 in | about 2% | Yes | Yes |
| 13 in | about 13.5% | No | Yes |
| 19 in | about 20% | No | No |
A low moving truck at a standard dock can be out of range for electric handling equipment. Leveler lengths vary; the building's own equipment decides the real grade.
When the truck and the dock do not match
- Liftgate: lowers freight to the ground or raises it to a dock face. Budget and Penske list 3,000 lb liftgates on their 26 ft trucks. See liftgate truck.
- Ramp: for hand trucks and dollies, not pallet jacks with heavy pallets. See box truck ramp.
- Ask the receiver: some docks have equipment for low vehicles and some do not. Ask before you go.
- Wrong truck for the job: if you load at warehouses every day, a dock height body saves time on every stop.

Choosing dock height or not
Pick the floor height from where you load and unload most:
- Mostly warehouse docks: dock height body, ideally with a liftgate as backup.
- Mostly homes, stores and job sites: a lower floor with a liftgate or ramp.
- A mix: dock height plus liftgate covers both, at the cost of the liftgate's weight and upkeep.
Measure the floor height of any truck you are buying: from the ground to the top of the floor at the rear, unloaded, on level ground. Sizes are on the box truck sizes chart, and the size guides for the 16 foot box truck, 20 foot box truck and 26 foot box truck cover each size in detail. The truck size calculator checks a load against a box.

Questions box truck owners ask
Q-01What is dock height for a box truck?
A floor height close to the loading docks the truck will use. Blue Giant, a dock equipment maker, gives 48 to 52 inches as the most common dock height. A box truck with its floor in or near that range, like Penske's 22 to 26 ft trucks at about 46 to 50 inches, can be loaded across a dock leveler with little slope.
Q-02How high is a loading dock?
The most common dock height is 48 to 52 inches, according to Blue Giant's dock design guidance. Blue Giant advises building docks for the vehicles a facility serves most often, and vehicle beds range from about 30 to 62 inches, so not every truck lines up with every dock.
Q-03Can a low box truck use a loading dock?
Sometimes. A dock leveler can bridge some difference, but the slope gets steep fast. Blue Giant gives a maximum grade of 10% for electric handling equipment and 15% for gas or diesel equipment. Beyond that, use a liftgate, a ramp, or a dock with equipment built to serve low trucks.
Q-04Dock height or liftgate: which do I need?
It depends on where you load and deliver. Dock height suits warehouse-to-warehouse freight moved by pallet jack or forklift. A liftgate suits homes, stores and job sites without docks. Some freight box trucks have both: Penske's 22 to 26 ft trucks list a floor of about 46 to 50 inches and a 3,000 lb liftgate.
