20 foot box truck: dimensions, payload and the rules that come with it
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
The 20 foot box truck sits in the middle of the box truck range: bigger than a 16, smaller than a 22 or 26, and rated far below the CDL line. This guide covers its real dimensions from a published spec, what it can carry, how to spot a spec sheet that does not add up, and the license and DOT rules that apply.
20' box truck dimensions
Enterprise publishes a 20 ft box truck spec on both its US and Canadian sites. The US page lists:
| Spec | Enterprise 20 ft (US) |
|---|---|
| Box dimensions | 20 ft x 96 in x 84 in (L x W x H) |
| Payload | up to 5,000 lb |
| Fuel | diesel, 30 gallon tank |
| Door | rear roll-up, wood tie slats, E-track |
| Seating | 3 |

The Canadian business page lists the same class of truck at 960 cubic feet of cargo space and a GVWR of 14,500 lb, with a tuck-under liftgate available.

U-Haul's 20 ft truck page, read through an Internet Archive snapshot of September 28, 2026 because the live site blocks automated access, gives inside measurements:
| Spec | U-Haul 20 ft |
|---|---|
| Inside dimensions | 19 ft 5 in x 7 ft 8 in x 7 ft 1 in (L x W x H) |
| Volume | 1,016 cu ft |
| Deck height from ground | 35 in |
| Door opening | 7 ft 3 in W x 6 ft 5 in H |
| Max load | 5,700 lb |
| Gross vehicle weight | 14,500 lb max |
| Empty weight | 8,800 lb |
| Clearance height | 11 ft |

So a 20' box truck is about 8 ft wide and 7 ft tall in its box. Like most rental specs, these are box dimensions, and the usable inside space is a little smaller once you account for walls, rails and the door frame. Measure the truck you get before you promise a customer a load.
Read the spec sheet: does the payload add up?
Here is a check worth doing on any box truck listing. The same Canadian page that lists a 14,500 lb GVWR also lists a payload of up to 10,000 lb. Those two numbers cannot both be right for one truck. Payload is the GVWR minus what the truck weighs empty, and 10,000 lb of payload would leave only 4,500 lb for a diesel chassis, cab and 20 ft box.
EXAMPLE, using the published rating:
| Pounds | |
|---|---|
| GVWR (Enterprise Canada) | 14,500 |
| Payload claimed on the same page | 10,000 |
| Empty weight that would require | 4,500 |
| Payload listed on Enterprise US | up to 5,000 |
| Empty weight that implies | about 9,500 |
The US figure is the one that fits, and U-Haul's numbers confirm the pattern: its 20 footer is rated 14,500 lb, weighs 8,800 lb empty, and lists a 5,700 lb max load, exactly the difference. The lesson for any truck: trust the door-jamb sticker and a scale ticket over a marketing page.
Weight class, CDL and DOT rules
At 14,500 lb GVWR, a 20 ft box truck is a class 4 truck on the FHWA scale (14,001 to 16,000 lb). Two federal lines matter:
- CDL: required at 26,001 lb GVWR or more, or for placarded hazmat. A 20 ft box at 14,500 lb is far below it, so a regular license covers the driving for most builds.
- Commercial motor vehicle: for safety rules, a vehicle rated over 10,000 lb used in interstate commerce is a commercial motor vehicle. A business running one across state lines needs a USDOT number and has to follow the FMCSA safety rules that come with it, CDL or not.

A household renting a 20 footer to move its own furniture is a different case from a company hauling goods for pay. If you plan to use one for business, the DOT and MC number checker walks through which numbers you need.
How many pallets fit in a box 20 feet long
With an 8 ft wide box, two 48 x 40 inch pallets fit side by side with the 40-inch faces across. Each row then takes 48 inches of floor.
EXAMPLE, single-stacked, two across:
| Inside floor length | Full rows | Pallets |
|---|---|---|
| 20 ft 0 in (240 in) | 5 | 10 |
| 19 ft 5 in (233 in, U-Haul) | 4 | 8 |
Weight often decides before floor space does. Ten pallets at 500 lb each is 5,000 lb, the full payload on Enterprise's US spec. Dense freight such as tile, paper or drinks fills the payload long before its floor.
What a 20 ft truck is used for
- Moves: apartments and smaller houses, measured by cubic feet rather than room counts.
- Furniture and appliance delivery: with a liftgate, to homes and shops without a dock.
- Local business routes: restaurant supply, retail restocking, event equipment.
- Light pallet work: short runs of a few pallets between warehouses.
20 vs 16 and 22 ft
| 16 ft (Penske) | 20 ft (Enterprise / U-Haul) | 22 ft (Penske) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume | 800 cu ft | 960 / 1,016 cu ft | 1,200 cu ft |
| Payload | up to 4,300 lb | up to 5,000 / 5,700 lb | 10,000 lb |
| GVW / GVWR | up to 12,500 lb | 14,500 lb | not listed |

The big step is between the 20 and the 22: Penske's 22 lists about twice the payload of Enterprise's 20. For lighter freight, the 16 foot box truck or 12 foot box truck may be enough; for more, see the 24 foot box truck. Every size is on our box truck sizes chart, and the truck size calculator checks your own load.
Renting or buying one
Renting suits moves, seasonal peaks and trying out a route. Buying suits steady local work where the freight reliably fits 960 cubic feet and 5,000 lb. Before buying a used one, check the GVWR sticker, weigh the truck empty to learn its real payload, and inspect the roll-up door, liftgate and floor. The used box truck guide covers the full inspection.

Questions box truck owners ask
Q-01How much weight can a 20 ft box truck carry?
About 5,000 to 5,700 lb: Enterprise's US page lists up to 5,000 lb and U-Haul a 5,700 lb max load, both on a 14,500 lb rating. A truck cannot carry more than its rating minus its own empty weight, so treat any higher figure with suspicion. For your own truck, weigh it empty with fuel and gear and subtract that from the GVWR.
Q-02Do you need a CDL to drive a 20 ft box truck?
No, not for a typical build. A CDL is required at 26,001 lb GVWR or more, or for placarded hazmat, and Enterprise's 20 ft truck is rated 14,500 lb. That is a class 4 truck. Business use can still bring DOT rules, because the commercial vehicle line for interstate work starts above 10,000 lb.
Q-03How many pallets fit in a 20 ft box truck?
About eight to ten standard 48 x 40 inch pallets, single-stacked two across. Four rows need 16 ft of floor and five rows need a full 20 ft, so the inside length decides it. Weight often runs out first: ten pallets at 500 lb each already equal Enterprise's 5,000 lb payload.
Q-04How many cubic feet is a 20 ft box truck?
Enterprise's Canadian business page lists 960 cubic feet for its 20 ft box. For comparison, Penske's 16 ft box lists 800 cubic feet and its 22 ft box 1,200. The exact figure depends on the body's inside height and wheel well design, so check the spec sheet of the truck you are renting or buying.
Q-05Is a 20 ft box truck big enough for a house move?
It depends on how much you own, not the number of rooms. Add up the cubic feet of your larger items and boxes and compare it with the truck's listed volume, about 960 to 1,016 cubic feet for a 20 footer. If you are close to the limit, the next size up costs less than a second trip.
