10 foot box truck: dimensions, payload and what a short box is for

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The 10 foot box truck is the smallest size in the big rental fleets we checked: a short box on a light-duty chassis, sized for studio moves, single deliveries and errands too big for a pickup. People call it a short box truck, and it behaves differently from the bigger sizes in a few ways that matter: a low deck, no ramp, and a weight rating that keeps it under the federal commercial vehicle line. Here are the real numbers and what they mean.

10 ft box truck dimensions

U-Haul publishes a detailed spec for a 10' box truck. Its truck page, checked through an Internet Archive snapshot dated September 28, 2026 because the live site blocks automated access, lists:

U-Haul notes that its measurements are approximate and vary with the production model you receive. Budget does not rent a truck it calls 10 ft, but its 12 ft class truck measures 10 ft 0 in long, 6 ft 0 in wide and 6 ft 3 in high inside, with 380 cubic feet. So a "12 ft" rental from one company and a "10 ft" from another can be nearly the same box.

What is a short box truck?

"Short box truck" is shop and rental-counter language for the smallest boxes, usually 10 to 12 ft, built on a light-duty cutaway chassis: a van-style cab with the box mounted right behind it. It is not a legal category. The rules that apply come from the truck's weight rating, not its nickname.

What sets a short box apart from bigger sizes in practice:

  • Low deck. U-Haul's 10 ft truck sits 29 inches off the ground, against 33 to 35 inches on its 15 to 26 ft trucks. Lifting into it by hand is easier, which matters because it has no ramp.
  • Narrow box. At 6 ft 3 in inside, it cannot take two pallets side by side.
  • Light rating. At 8,600 lb, it is a class 2 vehicle on the FHWA scale (6,001 to 10,000 lb).

Weight, CDL and the 10,001 lb line

A 10 ft box truck stays clear of both federal lines that catch bigger trucks:

  • CDL: required at 26,001 lb GVWR or more, or for placarded hazmat. Not close.
  • Commercial motor vehicle (safety rules): a vehicle rated 10,001 lb or more used in interstate commerce. At 8,600 lb, U-Haul's 10 footer is under it.

That does not mean no rules at all. Placarded hazmat brings its own requirements at any weight, and states set their own rules for intrastate business use. If you plan to use a short box truck for paid work, run your case through the DOT and MC number checker.

How many pallets fit

The answer comes down to a single inch. A standard pallet is 48 x 40 inches, and two across needs at least 80 inches of width, so a 75-inch box takes one across. The floor length then decides the rows.

EXAMPLE, single-stacked, one across:

BoxInside lengthPallet orientationRowsPallets
U-Haul 10 ft119 in48 in along the floor22
U-Haul 10 ft119 in40 in along the floor22
Budget 12 ft class120 in40 in along the floor33
EXAMPLE

Three 40-inch rows need 120 inches. U-Haul's floor is 119, so it stops at two; Budget's is 120, so it fits three. Measure before you promise anyone a pallet count, or let the truck size calculator do the floor math on your measurements.

Payload: what 2,850 lb looks like

Max load is the truck's rating minus its empty weight: 8,600 minus 5,790 leaves 2,810 lb by our math, close to U-Haul's listed 2,850 lb. That is the budget for freight, people and anything else you add. A couple of adults, a dolly and moving blankets can take a few hundred pounds of it before any furniture goes in.

Bulky, light goods fill the 402 cubic feet first: mattresses, couches, boxes of clothes. Dense goods fill the weight first: books, tile, tools, appliances. If a load is mostly dense, weigh as you go.

What a 10 ft truck is good for

  • Small moves: studios, dorms and small apartments.
  • Single deliveries: a couch, a bed, an appliance or two.
  • Trades and errands: materials and tools that need a dry, locked box.
  • Towing: U-Haul rates it to tow up to 6,000 lb, so it can pull a small trailer for extra room.

What it is not built for: pallet freight in volume, anything over about 5 ft 7 in tall that cannot tip on its side, or heavy loads. Drive-thrus and parking garages still need a look at the posted clearance; the truck stands 9 ft.

10 ft box truck vs bigger sizes

One line each: the 12 foot box truck is the next step and, at some rental companies, nearly the same box; the 16 foot box truck roughly doubles the space; the 20 foot box truck moves into heavier, class 4 territory. All sizes side by side: the box truck sizes chart.

Renting or buying one

Renting covers most uses: a move, a delivery, a weekend project. Buying makes sense for a trade or small business that hauls light, bulky goods several times a week and wants a lockable box with a short footprint. When buying used, check the GVWR sticker, weigh the truck empty, and inspect the cutaway chassis, the roll-up door and the floor. For the full pre-purchase checklist, see used box truck.

Questions box truck owners ask

Q-01What is a short box truck?

It is an informal name for the smallest box trucks, usually 10 to 12 ft boxes on a light-duty cutaway chassis. They carry a few thousand pounds and fit where bigger boxes cannot. The term is not a legal class; the GVWR on the door sticker is what decides the rules.

Q-02How much can a 10 ft truck carry?

U-Haul lists a max load of 2,850 lb for its 10 ft truck, on a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,600 lb with 5,790 lb empty. Everything in the cab counts too, so two adults and a full tank come out of that number. Weigh dense items like books and tools first; they hit the limit fast.

Q-03Do you need a CDL or DOT number for a 10 ft box truck?

No CDL: that starts at 26,001 lb GVWR. As for DOT, the federal commercial vehicle definition for interstate safety rules starts at 10,001 lb, and a 10 ft truck rated 8,600 lb sits under it. Hauling hazmat that needs placards, or for-hire rules in your state, can still apply, so check your own case.

Q-04How many pallets fit in a 10 ft box truck?

Two standard 48 x 40 inch pallets in U-Haul's 10 ft truck, single-stacked. The box is too narrow for two across, and its 9 ft 11 in floor is one inch short of three 40-inch rows. Budget's 12 ft class truck, which measures 10 ft 0 in inside, fits three that way.

Q-05What fits in a 10 ft truck?

About 400 cubic feet: a studio or small one-bedroom move, a king bed with a few pieces of furniture and boxes, or a load of tools and materials. The rear door opening is 5 ft 7 in high on U-Haul's, lower than the box, so tall items may need to go in on their side.
